Is ultrasound scan safe?

Ultrasound scan technology has been in use now for up to 30 years. Many studies have looked into the safety of ultrasound scanning. There is no evidence that ultrasound poses any risk to the baby or mother.

Who will perform my scan?

Our sonographers have many years of experience in pregnancy scanning within the NHS and are registered with the Health Professions Council as well as holding the Fetal Medicine Foundation Accreditation. They are very friendly and warm and they love their work with a passion.

What is the difference between 2D, 3D and 4D scans?

2D refers to the traditional black and white scans. 3D refers to the static three dimensional images and 4D scan refers to real time three dimensional moving image of the baby.

When can I have a 2D scan?

A 2D (black and white) scan can be carried out at any time in pregnancy. Many people are particularly keen to have an early pregnancy scan to confirm viability.

When can I have 3D/4D scan?

Ideally anytime between 26 and 34 weeks is optimal for both 3D (static images) and 4D (moving images) scans. If however you are carrying a set of twins, then ideally you can book your 4D scans between 24-28 weeks.

What factors can affect my scan?

To a greater extent the baby’s position determines the ease or difficulty of acquiring optimal images. Other factors include the amount of fluid around the baby (the less the more difficult) as well as the relative gap between the baby and the scan probe (mother’s build). If the baby is in an awkward position it is sometimes better to move around for a while to see if the baby changes to a more favourable position. Sometimes it may be necessary to postpone the scanning to another time.

What if something unusual is detected?

If something unexpected or unusual is detected during your scan, our sonographer will carefully explain it to you and with your permission write a report and advise a prompt follow up by your doctor, midwife or Obstetrician.

Can you tell if it’s a boy or a girl?

It is usually possible to identify the gender of a baby with a high degree of certainty if the baby is in a favourable position. This is not however absolutely guaranteed.
